How to do it

  1. Stand tall, then swing one leg up and out to the side.
  2. As you kick, pivot a half turn toward the kicking leg.
  3. Step down into your new direction and stay controlled.
  4. Repeat, alternating legs as you go.

The one cue that matters

Keep the swinging leg fairly straight and lead the turn with your hips, not your shoulders.

Muscles worked

This drill takes your adductors through a dynamic range most warm-ups skip entirely. Swinging the leg up and out to the side lengthens the inner thigh under control, and the half turn into each new step adds the hip rotation that squats, lunges and change-of-direction work all depend on. It earns its slot in warm-ups before any leg session where the hips need to be genuinely open, not just warm.

FAQ

What are walking side kicks with a half turn actually for?

Opening the inner thighs and hips dynamically before training. The sideways swing stretches the adductors on the move, and the pivot wakes up hip rotation, both of which matter before deep squats or lateral work.

How high should the side kick go?

Height is not the goal, control is. Swing to a comfortable stretch along the inner thigh with a fairly straight leg, and let the range grow naturally as the set goes on.

I keep losing balance on the turn, what am I doing wrong?

You are probably leading the pivot with your shoulders. Let the hips drive the half turn, keep your chest tall, and step down deliberately into the new direction before the next kick.
