How to do it

  1. Sit in the machine and grip the handles with elbows fixed.
  2. Keep your upper arms pinned against the pad.
  3. Extend your arms until straight.
  4. Return slowly to a full stretch.

The one cue that matters

Squeeze at full extension and control the way back.

Muscles worked

With your upper arms pinned to the pad, the machine removes every trick your body uses to help the triceps, no shoulder drift, no elbow wander, just extension from stretch to lockout. The fixed pivot keeps resistance on the muscle through the entire arc, including the lockout squeeze that sloppy free extensions skip. It is the cleanest way to isolate the triceps and push sets deep without anything else giving out first.

FAQ

Machine extension or cable pushdowns?

The machine wins on strictness, the pad stops your elbows drifting and your shoulders helping, which pushdowns cannot police. Pushdowns offer more freedom and grip variety. Use the machine when you want guaranteed isolation and honest progression.

My elbows ache on these. Any fixes?

Start lighter with higher reps, 12 to 20, and make sure you are not slamming into lockout. Check the seat height too, if your upper arms are not flush with the pad the machine pivot fights your elbow instead of matching it. Slow negatives, smooth turnarounds.

Why do I feel it in my shoulders?

Your upper arms are lifting off the pad as you extend, turning the rep into a pushing hybrid. Drop the weight, glue your arms to the pad, and think of your forearms as the only moving part. If the pad position is wrong for your build, adjust it before blaming the exercise.
