Loads your traps safely for thick, capped upper back.

Lift straight up and down, don't roll your shoulders.
This machine takes the traps through a straight vertical line, from a long stretch with the shoulders relaxed down to a peak squeeze up by your ears, without grip strength capping the set. Because the load path is fixed, every rep hits the upper traps the same way, making progress easy to measure week to week. It is the simplest route to a capped upper back for lifters whose hands give out before their traps do.
Grip and consistency. Heavy shrugs with free weights often end when your hands quit, not your traps. The machine keeps the load stable and the path identical every rep, so the target muscle gets the full set.
Straight up, as the movement is built. The upper traps elevate the shoulders vertically, and adding a backwards pull just recruits everything else and muddies the stimulus. Save rowing for rowing.
At the bottom your shoulders should hang completely relaxed, feeling a stretch up the sides of your neck. At the top, shoulders as close to your ears as they physically go, held for a beat. If someone watching cannot clearly see both positions, shrink the weight, not the range.
