How to do it

  1. Adjust the seat and grab the handles at your sides.
  2. Let your shoulders drop into a full stretch.
  3. Shrug straight up toward your ears.
  4. Squeeze hard at the top, then lower with control.

The one cue that matters

Control the lowering. Letting the weight drop wastes half the rep.

Muscles worked

The machine shrug loads the traps through their one honest job, pulling your shoulders straight up toward your ears, with the seat and handles removing the grip and balance overhead of heavy free shrugging. Letting the shoulders drop into a full stretch between reps is what separates trap growth from ego bouncing. Nothing assists here, it is traps or nothing, which is exactly why it works.

FAQ

Why do my traps not grow from shrugs?

Usually range and tempo. Most people load too heavy, move the handles two inches, and drop them. Full stretch at the bottom, a hard one-second squeeze at the top, and a controlled three-second lowering will change everything within weeks.

Should I roll my shoulders at the top?

No. Rolling adds nothing for the traps and just grinds the shoulder joint under load. The traps lift your shoulder girdle straight up, so the rep is a vertical line, up, squeeze, down slow.

How heavy should machine shrugs be?

Heavy enough that the last few reps of a 10 to 15 rep set genuinely burn, light enough that you still reach full stretch and full squeeze every rep. If the pause at the top disappears, so does most of the stimulus.
