How to do it

  1. Stand tall and step forward.
  2. Swing the opposite leg up straight in front of you, reaching toward your toes with the same-side hand.
  3. Lower the leg and step into the next kick.
  4. Keep walking forward, alternating legs in a smooth rhythm.

The one cue that matters

Keep the kicking leg straight and lead with control, don't fling it past your range.

Muscles worked

Walking front kicks lengthen the hamstrings dynamically instead of holding a static stretch. Each controlled swing takes the back of the leg toward its end range while you are moving, and the glutes on the standing side work to keep your hips level and your posture tall. That combination makes it a staple of a proper warm-up before squats, deadlifts or sprinting, preparing the hamstrings for load without deadening them.

FAQ

When should I do walking front kicks?

In your warm-up, before lower-body training or running. Dynamic swings like this prepare the hamstrings for work far better than long static holds, which are better saved for after the session.

How high should I kick?

Only as high as you can with a straight leg and a tall chest. Flinging the leg past your range just makes your back round and your standing knee buckle, which defeats the purpose.

Should the kicks be fast or slow?

Smooth and rhythmic, with control at the top. Think of it as swinging to a stretch, not kicking a ball. The height can build gradually over the course of the set.
