Lunge low and pulse till it burns.

Keep the pulses small and controlled, staying low instead of standing all the way up.
With the rear foot in the strap and the front leg pinned near parallel, pulses keep the quad under continuous tension in the hardest part of the range, no lockout, no rest, just repeated small reps at the bottom. The glutes hold the pelvis steady and share the drive as the suspended rear leg removes any help from the back foot. It earns its place as a burnout and time-under-tension tool, extracting a savage training effect from nothing but bodyweight and a refusal to stand up.
They park you in the bottom of the rep where the quad works hardest and keep you there. No standing up means no rest between reps, which drives a burn and pump full-range lunges cannot match.
Small, a few centimetres up and down near the bottom of the split squat. Rising halfway to standing turns it back into ordinary reps and releases the tension you are there to keep.
At the end of a leg session as a finisher, or after your main lunging work. They pre-fatigue the quads fast, so putting them first will tax everything that follows.
