Lateral bounds with the straps for a heart-pumping leg burn.

How to do it

  1. Face the anchor and hold a handle in each hand with slight tension.
  2. Shift onto one leg and hop laterally to the other side.
  3. Land soft into a shallow lunge, sweeping the trailing leg behind.
  4. Bound back the other way and keep alternating for the set time.

The one cue that matters

Land soft and controlled, using the straps for balance not to yank yourself across.

Muscles worked

Bounding side to side for time turns the quads into shock absorbers, catching your bodyweight on each landing and immediately loading up the next push off, while the glutes power the lateral drive and steady the hip on every single-leg catch. The light strap tension lets you commit to bigger bounds and softer landings than you would risk freestanding. It earns its place as conditioning with a lateral bias, building the side-to-side spring and landing control that forward running never develops.

FAQ

What are TRX ice skaters good for?

Lateral power and conditioning. The bounds train your legs to push off and land sideways under control, which carries over to any sport with cutting or a change of direction, while the timed format keeps your heart rate up.

Should I use the straps to pull myself across?

No, they are for balance only. Generate the bound from your legs and let the straps quiet the landing, yanking yourself across defeats the exercise.

How wide should each bound be?

As wide as you can land softly with a controlled shallow lunge. Distance you cannot land quietly is distance you have not earned yet.
