How to do it

  1. Stand on one foot with the ball on a step or the machine platform, heel off.
  2. Hold a support or the machine for balance.
  3. Lower your heel below the step for a deep stretch.
  4. Drive up onto your toes as high as you can.
  5. Squeeze at the top, lower slowly, then switch legs.

The one cue that matters

Keep the working leg straight and chase a full stretch to a full squeeze every rep.

Muscles worked

Standing on one straight leg puts the entire load through a single calf, with the gastrocnemius doing the heavy lifting from a deep heel drop to a full rise onto the toes. The machine platform and support handle take balance out of the equation, so effort goes into the muscle rather than staying upright. It belongs in your training because calves respond to full range and focused work, and one leg at a time delivers both while exposing which side is stronger.

FAQ

Why train calves one leg at a time?

Calf imbalances are common and hide easily in two-leg raises. Single leg work loads each side equally and doubles the effective load without adding plates.

How deep should the heel drop go?

As low as your ankle allows, with a controlled pause in the stretch. The bottom stretch is where most of the growth stimulus lives, so do not cut it short.

Should I do these fast or slow?

Slow and controlled, especially on the way down. Bouncing turns the rep into a tendon rebound and robs the calf of the tension it needs.
