How to do it

  1. Stand side-on to a low cable and grab the handle with the far hand across your body.
  2. Raise your arm out to the side up to shoulder height.
  3. Pause and squeeze the side delt.
  4. Lower slowly across your body, then switch sides.

The one cue that matters

The cable keeps tension even at the bottom, so lead with the elbow and don't let it go slack.

Muscles worked

Standing side-on with the cable running across your body means the side delt is loaded from the very bottom of the raise, the exact zone where a dumbbell version has nothing to offer. One arm at a time keeps the reps strict and lets you watch the working delt carry the handle to shoulder height. It earns its place as the constant-tension lateral raise, ideal for building side delt width without heaving weight around.

FAQ

Why use a cable instead of dumbbells for lateral raises?

Tension. A dumbbell is almost weightless at your side and heaviest at the top, while the cable across your body loads the delt through the entire arc, bottom included.

How high should I raise the handle?

Shoulder height, no higher. Above that the traps take over and the side delt clocks off. Pause at the top, then fight the handle back down slowly.

Why lead with the elbow on cable lateral raises?

Leading with the elbow keeps the movement in the shoulder and stops the hand and wrist steering the rep. Think about pushing the elbow out and up, not lifting the handle.
