How to do it

  1. Start in a strong push-up position, body in a straight line.
  2. Lower your chest toward the floor and press back up.
  3. At the top, rotate your torso and reach one arm to the ceiling into a side plank.
  4. Return that hand to the floor and repeat on the other side.

The one cue that matters

Stack your shoulders as you rotate and keep your hips from sagging.

Muscles worked

You get a full push-up, chest lowering to the floor and triceps and shoulders driving you back up, then the rotation into a side plank makes your shoulders stabilise your whole bodyweight on one arm. That reach to the ceiling turns a pressing rep into a control test, because nothing about the twist works if your body is not rigid. It earns its place as a bodyweight combo that trains pushing strength and rotation in the same breath.

FAQ

Is the rotation push-up harder than a normal push-up?

Yes, and not just because of the extra movement. The rotation forces one arm to support and balance everything while your torso turns, so you get fewer reps than your normal push-up count. Expect that and keep the reps clean.

Why do I wobble when I rotate into the side plank?

Usually you are rotating before you have finished the press, or your feet are too close together. Lock out the push-up first, then rotate as one rigid unit with your shoulders stacked over the supporting hand.

How can I make rotation push-ups easier?

Do the push-up from your knees, then rise to your toes for the rotation. You can also shrink the rotation, reaching your hand to your hip instead of the ceiling, until the full twist feels stable.
