How to do it

  1. Stand facing away from a low box, heels close to it.
  2. Dip into a quarter squat and swing your arms back.
  3. Explode up and back, landing both feet softly on top of the box.
  4. Stand tall, then step down carefully and reset.

The one cue that matters

Start with a low box, this needs spatial awareness, never jump higher than you can land soft.

Muscles worked

Jumping backward onto a box demands the same explosive quad and glute drive as any jump, plus a level of body control and spatial awareness that forward jumps never ask for, you cannot see your landing. The quarter squat dip and arm swing load the spring, and the soft two-foot landing on top finishes the rep. It earns its place as an advanced jump progression for athletes who have already mastered forward box jumps and want to sharpen coordination alongside power.

FAQ

Is the reverse box jump safe?

It is an advanced drill with a real skill component, so respect the progression. Start with a very low box, master soft controlled landings, and never chase height, the exercise punishes overconfidence.

What box height should I use?

Lower than your forward box jump, significantly. Since you cannot see the landing, pick a height where you stick every rep quietly, and stay there longer than feels cool.

Who should actually do these?

Athletes comfortable with regular box jumps who want more coordination and spatial awareness in their power work. If forward jumps are still shaky, build those first.
