Lunge low and pulse till the legs scream.

Keep the pulses shallow and controlled, staying low instead of standing fully each rep.
Staying sunk near the bottom of the lunge and pulsing through a few inches keeps the quads under near-constant tension in their most stretched, most demanding range. The glutes assist to stabilise the pelvis and drive each small rise on the front leg. It earns its place as a leg finisher or a way to make bodyweight lunges brutally hard without adding a single kilo.
Start with 8 to 12 pulses before driving up to stand, then switch legs. When that feels easy, add pulses or slow them down rather than speeding up.
Regular lunges give the muscle a break at the top of every rep. Pulses stay in the bottom range where the quads never get to relax, so fatigue stacks fast.
Slow down and shrink the pulse. Keep your weight through the front foot and chest up, and the wobble usually cleans itself up as the leg gets stronger in that bottom position.
