How to do it

  1. Set up over the bar like a deadlift with a shoulder width grip.
  2. Pull the bar up your legs and explode through your hips.
  3. Shrug and pull under, catching the bar on your front delts in a quarter squat.
  4. Stand tall to finish.

The one cue that matters

Catch it high, above a half squat, that's what makes it a power clean not a full clean.

Muscles worked

The power clean is triple extension in its purest form, your quads drive the bar off the floor and through the explosive hip finish, while the hamstrings, back, shoulders and core all contribute to the pull and the catch on the front delts. Catching above a half squat is what defines it, the bar has to be pulled high because you refuse to drop deep under it. It is the go-to barbell lift for turning gym strength into raw explosive power.

FAQ

What is the difference between a power clean and a full clean?

The catch height. A power clean is received above a half squat, while a full clean rides the bar down into a deep front squat, which lets you rescue heavier attempts with less pull height.

My arms bend early and the bar crashes on me. What is going wrong?

You are pulling with the arms instead of finishing the hips. Stay patient, keep the arms long until the hips have fully extended, then shrug and pull yourself under.

What reps work best for power cleans?

Low reps, usually singles to triples with a full reset each time. Power is the goal, and fatigued sloppy reps train the opposite of explosiveness.
