How to do it

  1. Set up over the bar with a shoulder-width grip and flat back.
  2. Explode the bar up and catch it on your shoulders in a quarter squat.
  3. Drop into a front squat, then drive up and press the bar overhead.
  4. Lower the bar to the floor and reset each rep.

The one cue that matters

Use the leg drive out of the squat to launch the press in one fluid motion.

Muscles worked

This complex strings a power clean into a front squat and drives straight through into an overhead press, so your quads power both the pull and the squat while your shoulders and glutes carry the finish overhead. The magic is the transfer, the leg drive out of the squat launches the bar so the press is a punch rather than a grind. Few barbell movements pack this much work into a single rep.

FAQ

How is this different from a regular thruster?

A regular thruster starts from a rack or with the bar already at the shoulders, this one starts on the floor, so every rep opens with a power clean. It adds a pull and makes the whole rep longer and more expensive.

Do I pause between the clean and the thruster?

Just long enough to settle the bar in the front rack and take a breath. Rushing from a sloppy catch straight into the squat is how reps get dumped forward.

What weight should I use?

Your limit is the overhead finish, not the clean, so load for the press. A weight you can thruster crisply for all reps beats one you can clean but grind overhead.
