How to do it

  1. Hold a PVC pipe overhead with a wide overhand grip, arms straight.
  2. Stand tall and brace your core.
  3. Gently ease the pipe back behind your head, opening the shoulders and chest.
  4. Hold and breathe into the stretch.

The one cue that matters

Widen the grip if it feels tight, never force the pipe back past comfort.

Muscles worked

This is a mobility drill rather than a strength move, using a light pipe as a lever to open up your overhead range. As you ease the PVC back behind your head, your shoulders are taken toward end range with almost no load, letting tight pressing shoulders gradually give way. It earns its place before overhead pressing days and anywhere the overhead position is the weak link.

FAQ

When should I do this stretch?

It works best in a warm-up before overhead pressing or snatching, and as an easy daily drill if your overhead mobility is poor. A minute or two is plenty.

How wide should I hold the pipe?

Wide enough that the stretch feels productive but never sharp. Start very wide, then narrow the grip over weeks as your range improves.

Why use a PVC pipe instead of a band or towel?

A rigid pipe keeps both arms honest, neither side can cheat by letting the tool bend or stretch. A band or towel works in a pinch, the pipe just gives cleaner feedback.
