How to do it

  1. Loop a mini band around your legs just above the knees or ankles.
  2. Drop into a quarter squat with feet shoulder-width.
  3. Step sideways, keeping tension on the band the whole time.
  4. Take several steps one way, then walk back.

The one cue that matters

Stay low and keep tension on the band. Don't let your feet click together between steps.

Muscles worked

Staying in a quarter squat while stepping sideways keeps the hip abductors under tension the entire set, the stepping leg pulls against the band while the stance leg resists being dragged inward. Walking back the other way flips the roles, so both hips get loaded in both jobs. It is the classic drill for the outer glutes that keep knees tracking straight, which is why it lives at the start of so many leg days.

FAQ

Should the band go above my knees or around my ankles for lateral walks?

Above the knees is the standard and easiest to control. Ankle placement lengthens the lever and makes every step meaningfully harder, move it down once knee placement feels easy.

Why can't I stand up between steps?

Standing tall lets the band and your hips rest, killing the constant tension that makes the drill work. Stay in the quarter squat the whole width of the walk, that is where the burn comes from.

When should I do lateral band walks in my workout?

Before squats, lunges, or running as activation for the outer glutes. A couple of trips each way is enough to wake the hips up without tiring your legs out.
