How to do it

  1. Stand tall holding the ball, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Reach the ball overhead, rising onto your toes and extending your whole body.
  3. Slam it down hard into the floor, hinging at the hips and crunching your core.
  4. Catch the bounce or scoop it up and reset for the next rep.

The one cue that matters

Drive the slam with your core and hips, throw it down like you mean it.

Muscles worked

The slam takes your body from full extension on the toes to violent flexion, and your core is the engine that snaps the trunk down while the shoulders and back accelerate the ball overhead and hurl it into the floor. Because the ball leaves your hands, you can express real power on every rep without worrying about decelerating a weight. That makes it a rare lift that trains explosiveness, trunk flexion, and conditioning at the same time, which is why it shows up in finishers and power blocks alike.

FAQ

What weight medicine ball should I use for slams?

Lighter than you think. The rep should stay fast and violent, so pick a ball you can throw hard for every rep of the set rather than one you have to heave.

Do I need a slam ball or will a normal medicine ball work?

A dead-bounce slam ball is safest indoors. A regular medicine ball works too, just be ready to catch or dodge the rebound, the movement itself is identical.

Are med ball slams a core exercise or a cardio exercise?

Both, and that is the appeal. Short sets of hard, fast reps train explosive trunk power, longer sets with steady rhythm turn it into brutal conditioning.
