Lunge deep and reach for the ankle to open the hips.

Keep your chest open and spine long as you reach, don't round your back to get down.
Sinking into a deep lunge and reaching across for the front ankle turns a strength pattern into a hip opener, the quads and glutes of the front leg hold the depth while the reach drops your hips further into the stretch. The cross-body grab pulls your torso low and long, opening the hip and groin of the rear leg. It belongs in warm-ups before leg day or sport, anywhere you want deep hip range with a bit of control built in.
The reach lets your hips sink deeper than a normal lunge allows, opening the front of the rear hip and the groin, while the front leg works to hold the position. It is equal parts stretch and low-position strength.
Reach for your shin or knee instead and stop there. The win is a long spine and sinking hips, not touching the ankle. As your hips open over the weeks, your hand will get lower without the round.
Before lower-body training or sport, after a couple of minutes of general movement. A few slow reps per side beats one long hold, the in-and-out keeps it a dynamic warm-up rather than a static stretch.
