Loop Band Overhead Shoulder Stretch exercise demonstration
StretchingSecondary: ShouldersBand

How to do it

  1. Hold the loop band overhead with both hands, wider than shoulders.
  2. Pull outward to create tension across the band.
  3. Gently reach the band back behind your head, opening the chest and shoulders.
  4. Hold and breathe into the stretch.

The one cue that matters

Keep arms straight and widen the grip to dial the stretch up or down.

Muscles worked

This is a band-assisted stretch for overhead range, gripping the loop wide with outward tension and easing it back behind your head so the shoulders and chest open under gentle, adjustable load. The outward pull on the band is what makes it work, it sets the shoulder blades and lets you take the arms further back than an unassisted stretch would allow. It earns its place before pressing, snatching or anything overhead, and as daily maintenance for desk-bound shoulders.

FAQ

How wide should I grip the band for this shoulder stretch?

Start wide, well outside shoulder width, and narrow your grip over weeks as your range improves. Wider is easier, narrower is more intense, that's your progression dial built into one band.

Should this stretch hurt?

No. You want a strong opening sensation across the chest and front of the shoulders, never pinching or sharp pain inside the joint. If it pinches, widen your grip and reduce how far back you take the band.

How long should I hold the overhead band stretch?

20 to 40 seconds with steady breathing works well, repeated two or three times. Before training, keep it gentle and shorter, deeper holds fit better after a session or in a dedicated mobility block.
