How to do it

  1. Stand on the loop band and hold the top with both hands at your thighs.
  2. Hinge slightly and brace your core.
  3. Pull the band up and out toward your chin, elbows leading high.
  4. Lower under control and keep tension on the band.

The one cue that matters

Drive the elbows up and out, keep your wrists below your elbows.

Muscles worked

The band high pull is an explosive vertical pull, driving the elbows up and out against tension that spikes just as your hands approach chin height, right where the delts are working hardest. Starting from a slight hinge lets you snap into each rep with intent, making it as much a power drill as a shoulder builder. It's a strong pick for warming up before pressing or overhead work, priming the delts and upper back with speed instead of grind.

FAQ

Is the band high pull the same as an upright row?

Close cousins. The high pull is done explosively with a slight hinge and a wider, more outward elbow path, which most shoulders tolerate much better than a slow, strict upright row ground out close to the body.

Why do my wrists hurt on band high pulls?

Your hands are climbing above your elbows at the top, cranking the wrists. Lead with the elbows and keep your wrists relaxed and below them the entire pull, the hands are just hooks.

Should band high pulls be done fast or slow?

Fast up, controlled down. The movement is meant to be explosive on the pull, then you resist the band back to the start rather than letting it snap your arms down.
